About 'ikea kitchen islands'|Mother's Day Bonus Scrapbook Inspiration {Megan Hoeppner} : Ikea Bygel Cart = Scrapbooking Bliss! (P.S. Noell Hyman - this is the solution to your desire for a scrapbooking kitchen island!)

A               well               designed               kitchen               is               where               your               family               can               gather               and               work               together.

If               it's               poorly               designed               this               all               falls               apart.

When               designing               a               kitchen               most               people               don't               think               of               the               more               basic               design               elements.

With               a               little               planning               you               can               create               your               dream               kitchen               and               avoid               the               mistakes               that               others               have               made.

Here               is               a               list               of               the               top               ten               design               mistakes               to               avoid               while               designing               your               kitchen.

1.Not               having               an               exhaust               fan
The               most               beautiful               kitchen               in               the               world               will               still               be               uninviting               if               it               smells.

Some               people               think               that               the               exhaust               is               simply               there               to               stop               water               condensation               above               the               stove               but               it               serves               more               purpose               than               that.

The               exhaust               will               suck               up               any               unpleasant               smells               and               bring               in               fresh               air.

It               also               aides               in               stopping               grease               settling               on               your               cabinets.
               2.Door               Clearances
Most               people               know               to               measure               the               opening               for               their               appliances               but               a               lot               of               people               don't               take               into               account               the               amount               of               space               needed               to               open               the               doors.

Appliances               such               as               stoves,               refrigerators,               and               dishwashers               need               enough               clearance               to               be               able               to               open               their               doors               and               still               allow               enough               room               to               walk               past               them.

Nothing               is               more               annoying               than               opening               the               dishwasher               up               and               not               being               able               to               walk               around               it               to               put               dishes               away.
3.Unobstructed               path               from               the               kitchen               to               the               dining               area
You               want               your               kitchen               to               flow               smoothly               but               don't               forget               to               take               into               account               the               flow               from               the               kitchen               on               through               to               the               dining               area.

You'll               want               the               straightest               line               possible               so               you're               not               walking               around               islands               and               then               another               counter               or               open               stove               or               refrigerator               doors.
               4.Dishwasher               placement
You               will               want               your               dishwasher               near               the               sink               so               dirty               dishes               can               be               rinsed               and               loaded               easily.

You               will               also               want               cabinets               and               drawers               to               one               side               of               the               dishwasher               for               easy               unloading.

If               the               cabinet               is               directly               above               the               dishwasher               it's               hard               to               have               it               open               and               still               reach               to               put               the               dishes               away.

If               the               cabinets               are               to               the               side               you               can               stand               directly               below               them               and               unloading               it               is               fast               and               simple.
               5.Not               enough               light
A               bright               halogen               or               fluorescent               light               in               the               middle               of               the               kitchen               is               not               enough!

Consider               track               lighting               that               runs               above               the               work               space               and               a               light               above               the               sink               and               stove.

If               you               have               an               island               provide               plenty               of               light               across               that               too.
               6.Skimping               on               outlets
Yes,               your               big               major               appliances               will               obviously               have               their               own               outlet               but               there               are               tons               of               smaller               appliances               that               will               be               taking               their               place               on               your               counters               and               most               these               days               have               very               short               cords.

Some               like               your               coffee               pot               tend               to               remain               plugged               in               all               the               time.

Consider               that               you               can               start               your               supper               in               the               morning               by               throwing               something               together               in               the               crock               pot,               The               kids               are               making               toast,               you're               making               coffee,               the               radio               is               on,               and               you               have               a               frying               pan               plugged               in               for               pancakes.

Right               there               you               are               already               using               five               outlets.

You               will               want               enough               of               them               to               have               many               things               plugged               in               at               once               and               you'll               want               them               spaced               far               enough               apart               to               you               have               enough               room               to               use               everything.
               7.Counter               Material
There               are               tons               of               counter               material               available               these               days               but               be               careful               what               you               choose.

Some               like               concrete               and               stone               need               to               be               maintained.

Tile               needs               to               be               sealed.

Other               materials               can't               take               heat.

Consider               your               lifestyle               and               what               will               best               suit               you.
               8.Size               of               island
Many               people               think               that               the               bigger               the               island               the               better.

But               this               isn't               always               true.

An               island               that               is               out               of               proportion               with               the               rest               of               your               kitchen               is               not               only               unsightly               but               also               not               very               functional.

A               too               big               island               is               hard               to               clean               and               when               using               the               underside               for               storage               provides               too               much               deep               space               that               you               can't               reach               anyway.
               9.Storage
You               will               want               a               lot               of               storage               but               keep               in               mind               that               the               storage               is               only               usable               if               it's               functional.

This               means               that               cabinets               shouldn't               be               too               deep               and               features               such               as               pull               out               drawers               to               reach               back               items               and               lazy               susans               are               a               must.

Consider               a               few               corner               cabinets               that               do               go               back               deeper               for               the               over               sized               appliances               that               aren't               used               daily.

Most               won't               fit               in               a               normal               sized               one.
               10.Appliance               placement
This               seems               like               something               simple               and               easy               but               I've               already               been               in               a               house               where               there               is               a               long               narrow               kitchen               with               a               long               island               down               the               middle               and               the               stove               and               sink               on               one               side               but               the               refrigerator               on               the               other.

Our               host               would               be               stirring               something               on               the               stove               and               then               have               to               walk               way               around               the               island               to               get               to               the               refrigerator.

Your               appliances               should               all               be               on               one               side               and               one               end               for               easy               flow.
With               a               little               bit               of               planning               your               dream               kitchen               can               be               within               your               reach               and               will               be               enjoyed               for               years.

If               you               want               to               plan               your               kitchen               out               first               at               home               go               to               www.ikea.com.

You               can               try               out               your               plan               and               see               how               it               works.
