About 'ikea united states'|The United States








In               Cheap:               The               High               Cost               of               Discount               Culture               by               Ellen               Ruppel               Shell               the               author               tries               to               explain               the               inner               connectedness               between               our               consumer               driven               society's               quest               for               lower               prices               and               it's               unintended               consequences.

The               author               makes               many               good               arguments.

Most               people               are               familiar               with               the               concept               that               by               sending               production               overseas               to               take               advantage               of               lower               labor               costs               we               have               the               consequence               of               higher               unemployment               here               in               the               United               States.
               The               problem               is               not               just               in               higher               unemployment               but               what               then               happens               to               the               worker               involved.

If               the               worker               is               from               a               smaller               community               that               was               overly               dependant               on               the               now               closed               plant               then               the               whole               town's               economy               quickly               collapses.

The               consumer               may               save               some               money               at               the               cash               register               but               it               doesn't               really               matter               that               much               if               the               consumer               ends               up               with               a               higher               tax               bill               to               pay               for               the               social               programs               to               help               the               now               unemployed               workers.
               Quality               also               suffers               as               the               quest               for               lower               priced               goods               quickly               leads               to               a               diminishing               of               quality.

Even               if               a               company               tries               to               maintain               quality               the               marketplace               will               no               longer               allow               it.

A               consumer               seeking               a               pair               of               shoes               for               example               will               get               a               certain               price               in               their               head               and               will               not               pay               extra               for               the               higher               quality               shoes.
               As               the               consumer               gets               used               to               lower               quality               goods               the               whole               concept               of               products               that               last               gets               lost               in               the               shuffle.

The               author               has               some               excellent               material               on               Ikea               and               its               business               model.

When               you               purchase               furniture               at               Ikea               you               have               no               intention               of               owning               it               for               many               years               and               you               certainly               have               no               intention               of               owning               something               permanently               and               passing               it               on               to               your               children.
               The               author's               writing               style               is               technically               proficient               and               she               makes               her               arguments               well.

She               seems               to               write               more               like               a               series               of               essays               instead               of               a               book               that               is               trying               to               make               a               linear               argument.

That               being               said               this               is               a               quality               book               well               worth               taking               a               look               at.

Especially               if               you               are               concerned               about               issues               as               far               afield               as               global               trade,               free               trade               and               the               environment.
